Rolling Dog Ranch

Rolling Dog Ranch is this amazing sanctuary in Blackfoot River Valley of western Montana. It is the one and only animal sanctuary of its kind--they cater to disabled pets. They have 60 animals right now, and 40 of them are blind. The couple that started Rolling Dog Ranch knew that animals with disabilities deserve a second chance too. Steve Smith, the cofounder, puts it this way: "They don't feel sorry for themselves. They don't want you to feel sorry for them. They just want a chance to get on with life and enjoy themselves."

Sarah Ause, the staff photographer at Best Friends Animal Society recently made a visit up there and documented their work. Don't miss the amazing slideshow of her visit here. Be sure to read Sarah's full story that accompanies the slide show to learn more about pet blindness and the amazing hearts of the founders of Rolling Dog Ranch.

  1. This is fantastic! We had a beautiful Shar-Pei who lost her eyesight, due to a vets misdiagnose & our lack of knowledge of the Shar-pei breed. By the time she was seven months old she could only she shapes, but this did not stop her from being the top dog. Cindi was not handicapped! This dog could smell chocolate (any kind of food )anywhere in our house even if it was in a metel cabinate. She loved to play outdoors. The only times that you could tell she was blind was when we moved to a new home or moved the furniture. We would take her through the new house & her companion dog showed her the way around the yard. Cindi was a wonderful dog who who was not disabled, we were. She lived through her ninth birthday. She had a great life & we love her & miss her terribly. Please keep up the great work. God Bless!
